Sturgis: More than just a Motorcycle Rally

Category : MC News

smri(December 13, 2012) -Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally Inc. (SMRi), official stewards of the Sturgis® brand, donated $50,000 to Sturgis® Rally Charities Foundation who will in turn distribute that as well as another $21,850 to 45 local charities in and around the Sturgis community. SMRi’s contribution was made possible by licensing agreements the organization manages for the Sturgis® brand.
“We worked hard to make sure we were able to make these funds available in time for the holiday season,” said Kathy Hersrud, president of Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation. “The beneficiary organizations and the clientele they serve are then able to use this funding to support programs they oversee as the year ends, or to devote them to 2013 programs.”
Sturgis Rally Charities distributed $71,850 in funds generated by Rally-related trademarks owned by the community non-profit SMRi as well as another $21,850 donated to Sturgis Rally Charities from a variety of local sources. In an annual effort to support and help improve the local area, 45 separate charities have received donations to help foster a strong local community. 4th Annual Sturgis Legends Ride ® for Charity Nears Sellout

Category : MC News

4th Annual Sturgis Legends Ride ® for Charity Nears Sellout
Rally kick-off event has raised more than $150,000 in three years

(DEADWOOD & STURGIS, S.D.) – Only a few spots remain for the Ride that kicks off the Sturgis Rally. The annual Legends Ride ® on Monday, August 8, pairs Rally-goers with celebrities and top-bike builders on a ride from Deadwood to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip ®, and the 4th annual Ride is on the verge of its fourth consecutive sellout.

All proceeds from the Legends Ride benefit local charities, including the Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. The event has raised more than $150,000 for local charities in the past three years.

Tickets for the ride are $150. The charitable contribution entitles contributors to pre- and post-ride events in Deadwood and at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, free parking in Deadwood and at The Chip, food and drinks prior to the concert, meet-and-greet opportunities with master builders and celebrities and a special souvenir gift pack. Tickets can be purchased at www.legendsride.com or by calling (605) 347-9000.

“The Legends Ride has quickly become a Rally tradition, and tickets are in high demand. Which really isn’t too surprising considering the world-class bike builders, celebrities and entertainment lined up for participants; and, of course, the chance to help a couple of great charities,” said George Milos, executive director of the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, an event sponsor. “We are proud to be a partner in this Rally event.”

The Legends Ride begins on Deadwood’s famed Main Street as the Silverado-Franklin and the Deadwood Tobacco Company roll out the red carpet for motorcyclists from around the world. Riders will revel in the unique atmosphere of this Wild West town as they celebrate a day with celebrities, builders, artists, cigar aficionados, along with a special group photo by renowned motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter. The 500-some riders and passengers will then head on a 55-mile route through some of the Black Hills’ most beautiful landscapes via pristine stretches of asphalt, finishing the journey at the Legendary Buffalo Chip for a reception, auction and concerts by rockers Buckcherry and Def Leppard.

“The Legends Ride provides the perfect backdrop to showcase the compassion and generosity of the motorcycle community to the entire world,” said Rod Woodruff, owner of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “While giving back is an option for some, it’s the foundation for the industry-leading business and civic-minded sponsors of the Legends Ride and we thank them for their support and generosity as we look forward to yet another highly successful event.”

K and G Cycles Great Sturgis Vacation Giveaway Grand Prize Winner

Category : Fun Stuff, MC News

Congratulation Again Tom on being our Grand Prize Winner of the K and G Cycles Great Sturgis Vacation Giveaway! Kyle and George are so excited to get to hang with you at Sturgis!

Thanks for taking time to tell us a little about yourself and your upcoming trip to Sturgis!

So Tom, how did you find out about winning our contest?

I first found out about being a winner when Kevin called me, I was at work and in a meeting and was only half listening. After I hung up I thought, did he just say what i thought he said. I called him back immediately and asked for all the details “again”

What was your first thought?

This is Awesome!

About You:

Where is your hometown?

Rapid City, S.D.

Where do you live now?

Gainesville, Florida

What do you do for a living?

I am the Plant Manager of Suwannee American Cement.

How about family?

I have two sons one in Gainesville, Fl and one in Rapid City SD, and 4 beautiful grand childern that are my pride and joy. All of my family lives in the Black Hills.

About Riding:

What was your first bike?

At 10 years old my grandparents bought me and my brother Honda 50 Mini trails. That was 42 years ago.

What are you riding now?

I do my long rides on a 2010 CVO StreetGlide, but every chance I get I ride my 1947 FL Knucklehead.

It looks like you like do your own work, tell us about your Knuckle?

The Knucklehead has tremendous sentimental value. It was given to me by my late Uncle Larry Mac. It was in need of a lot of work but it was his baby. I am still humbled that out of all his options he chose to give it to me. I spent about 10 months, countless hours and a “couple” dollars rebuilding it with the help of Nelson Citta at his shop. I wanted it to keep the late 70′s club bike look it had but add a touch of modern. It was truly a labor of love. I did things some people would scoff at like adding Brembo discs, but I ride the hell out of it and it was all about ride-ability when I built it. Mac was still alive when I started the rebuild and I would share pictures with him as the build progressed and it would lift his spirits to see it, but unfortunately mesothelioma took him before he could have that last ride on the Knuckle.

How about buying parts, why do you choose to K and G Cycles?

K and G Cycles came highly recommend by a good friend and Harley Builder Nelson Citta, Nelson has built dozens of Pans, Knuckles and Flatheads. Kevin, Tom and the rest of the staff at K and G were awesome when it came to helping me source everything from NOS motor parts to the few aftermarket parts that I added to my Knucklehead. They went the extra mile when it came to making sure I had the right part and got it on time. They are now my go to Parts Supplier.

About Sturgis:

How are you planning to travel to Sturgis and why?

I had been planning on flying up for a surprise visit to see my family and sneek in a couple Rally days. I am going to have to flip that around and do a couple family days and an entire Rally Week, winning this package makes that a little more guilt free. Who can fault me for that??

You’re going to be a VIP at the Chip, what are you most excited to see there?

“K and G Girls?” There are some great acts there so it’s hard to say, there is no “one” person, I think I could hang out with all of them. But I love to ride and I love art so I am pretty jacked for the Legends Ride and the Michael Lichter exhibition.

You’ll be on stage with Kyle and George before the Edgar Winter Concert, presented with the keys a new Victory loaner.
George is no stranger to the stage; he was the soundman for Edgar Winter, for 2 years, during the “They Only Come Out at Night Tour”!
Do you enjoy the spotlight?

Not until the second bottle of Scotch has been opened.

Any riding spots around the Sturgis area that you will be sure to hit up?

Sturgis through Vanocker Canyon through Nemo is a must do. The lakes ride is cool also (Sheridan and Pactola). I grew up with one foot in Sheridan Lake so I know the hills well.

Will you keep us up to date on your trip, we’d love to hear about all the cool things you’ll be a part of! (Answer is: You Better!)

I will and, I will post all my pictures on Facebook… the ones I can.

Thanks again Tom, for letting us ride along with you on your Great Sturgis Vacation!!!

Sturgis Buffalo Chip® Presents The Limpnickie Lot at the West Gate

Category : MC News

Buffalo Chip Campground, SD (July 1, 2011)-

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® is proud to announce the partnership they have embarked upon with the Limpnickie Lot to showcase the next generation of motorcycle builders.

This year the Limpnickie Lot will be featured at The Buffalo Chip®, near the West Gate (where the large Buffalo Sculpture is located) in the free area. They will be creating their own FREE Limpnickie village complete with over 20 Limpnickie Lot motorcycle builders and a skateboard ramp. The Limpnickie Lot brings with it two great Cycle Source Magazine events to Chip, The Cycle Source Free Night Time Chopper Show will take place on Friday August 12th, which is free to enter and features prizes from Legends Air and 10 classes to enter. The fifth annual Cycle Source Black Hills Run will start and end at The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® this year with a host of great destinations throughout the Black Hills. The ride will take place on Tuesday, August 9th at noon.

Rod Woodruff said “We have watched what Chris and Taber have created over the last few years and feel like the Buffalo Chip is the perfect place for them to realize their fullest potential in Sturgis. We see this as a long-term partnership that will round out the world class attractions that the Buffalo Chip already offers.”

“This new free area of the facility will be a combination of the laid back Limpnickie attitude and the world-class destination of the Chip.” Said co-owner of the Limpnickie Lot Chris Callen.

The Limpnickie Lot took the motorcycle industry by storm in March of 2008 during Daytona Bike Week when the original 11 Limpnickie Lot members took over the parking lot in front of the Stone Edge Skatepark. It was the first time young builders and small parts manufactures had joined together in an effort that would combine their passion for custom motorcycles and their cultural identifiers like skateboarding, punk rock and metal music. They had a successful week that changed the face of motorcycling and finally gave the rising next generation of motorcycle builders a united voice. “We wanted to have our own kind of rally and found other like minded next generation builders who shared our common interests. It has blown up over the last few years and we are really stoked to be at The Buffalo Chip this year.” Said co-owner of the Limpnickie Lot, Taber Nash.

The Limpnickie Lot addition is the crown on an already packed 30 Years Strong Celebration at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. This year the Sturgis Buffalo Chip will feature Charlie Brechtel, Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper, Pop Evil, Bachman Turner, Styx, Williams and Ree, Sweet Cyanide, Buckcherry, Def Leppard, Toby Keith, Poison, Lukas Nelson, Greg Allman, Lynrd Skynrd, Jeff Bridges and Friends, Saving Abel, Puddle of Mudd, Tesla and George Thorogood and the Destroyers.

For thirty years the Legendary Buffalo Chip has proven itself as the heart of Sturgis Rally Week. Poised and ready to once again offer their visitors the complete biker experience, the Legendary Buffalo Chip has rounded up an enormous selection of biker-centric fun and festivities in addition to offering the summer’s biggest and most authentic music experience of Rally Week. Reservations for multi-day passes or daily admissions are available online at BuffaloChip.com or by calling 605-347-9000 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (MST) Monday through Friday.

Skynyrd Rocks the Everywhere, Even the Chip!

Category : Fun Stuff

C’mon Gang, you gotta love the southern sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd! Even though they bring the classics, they’ve got some killer new stuff too!

This video gives you a taste of what they are up to now. We’re planning on seeing these rockers at the Legendary Buffalo Chip on Wednesday August 10th, and we hope you are too!

Win your way there with our Great Sturgis Vacation – Get entered now, before it’s too late!!

Simple Life

From humble beginnings in the summer of 1964, three kids from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd has become one of the most respected bands in rock, helping to create and sustain the southern rock genre. The band will play at the Legendary Buffalo Chip on Wednesday, Aug. 10 during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Named for a high school physical education teacher, Leonard Skinner, the band changed the spelling to draw attention to the southern accent shared by the band members.

Buffalo Chip music fans will remember the band’s killer performances on the “old stage” in 1998, as well as the performance that helped inaugurate the new stage in 1998.

“It is quite fitting that Lynyrd Skynyrd play the Buffalo Chip during our 30th annual celebration of freedom, better known as the Best Party Anywhere!™,” said Chip publicist Michael Sanborn. “Nobody rocks the house like Skynyrd.”

2011 Buffalo Chip Poster Model Crowned

Category : Fun Stuff

The Legendary Buffalo Chip brings you another beautiful reason to visit their world-class party during Sturgis this summer. Featured this year, once again, is Holli! Check out these photos and article from the Buffalo Chip.

If you want to see Holli in person to sign your Chip poster, then you can still Win your way there FREE with our Great Sturgis Vacation! Entries will only be accepted until July 4th, so Get Entered to WIN!!! Check out how at www.greatsturgisvacation.com This contest is so chock-full of awesome-ness it required it’s own website!

Here’s the account of how the contest went down. Check out more pictures from the finals here.

After a record setting number of contestants, this year’s 2011 Buffalo Chip Corona Poster Model has been crowned. Last year’s winner, Holli wasn’t about to give up her crown as she shocked and awed the competition yet again as she brought home her second consecutive title Saturday June 4 at Teddy’s in Rapid City.

Quickly becoming one of the most notable and popular pre-Sturgis Motorcycle Rally events in the area, the contest conveyed a finalist group consisting of twelve of the surrounding areas’ most stunningly beautiful and personable girls that the contest has ever seen.

With some new contestants and some returning with a vengeance, it seemed that the stakes were higher than ever. The girls were judged in three categories; bikini, lingerie, and biker wear. Dressed with looks that kill, the women took to the stage enjoying an ice cold Corona to answer questions that not only showed their quick wit but also how they could handle themselves with a microphone in front of the crowd, and they did very well.

Although they were in steep competition, the girls seemed to have a lot of fun throughout the night with smiles, laughter, and an occasional spanking out on the dance floor in between sessions.

“I have had lots of fun running around half naked drinking Corona,” said Alex, a super-cute contestant from Spearfish. “This has been very exciting and is definitely a different experience. My dreams to be a professional cheerleader and dancer made me sign up to do this. ”

Reasons for entering the competition always vary. Kristin, the tall, dark, gorgeous brunette from Gillette, WY said, “I am an aspiring model and am moving to New York to model and figured this would be a good way to get my name out there. It was definitely a spur of the moment.”

As the night neared its end the judges had their work cut out for them. The lovely ladies had spotlighted their wild personalities, hypnotizing moves, and sensual bodies and a lone winner was no easy decision. When the votes were cast it was nail-biting close, three contestants were separated by one vote each. And then they announced the winner, Holli.

“It was nerve wracking, I’m so excited and you can only do this for two years. I’m glad to be back,” said the naturally blonde, blue-eyed vixen and mother of two. “Last year I didn’t know what I was signing up for. This year I wanted to do it bigger, better, and stronger. It was a big competition and we had a blast, it was so much fun,” she added.

Holli will be The Legendary Buffalo Chip Poster Model along with billboard stardom and will receive an appearance fee for autograph sessions around the Black Hills prior to the Sturgis Rally. She will also work daily during Bike Week at the Chip receiving an hourly wage plus all of those generous tips that bikers give. Not to mention a pass to all of the Buffalo Chips headliner concerts throughout the week.

Sturgis Rally News – Trademark suit settled

Category : MC News

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. (SMRI) and a Kentucky entity formerly billing itself as the “Little Sturgis Rally” have settled a lawsuit over the use of “Sturgis” in connection with a motorcycle rally for an undisclosed sum.

The Kentucky group has agreed to change both its corporate and trade name, eliminating the word mark Sturgis when used in connection with a motorcycle rally or any other derivations of marks that may be confusingly similar to those owned by SMRi under a recent word mark registration.

Earlier this year the organizers of the July rally in Kentucky announced it would be called Kentucky Bikerfest in the future.

The group agreed last week to accept a consent final judgment and a stipulated permanent judgment in favor of SMRI, “Our organization is charged with promoting and enhancing the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally while providing a charitable return for the greater Sturgis area, and part of that responsibility is to protect the intellectual property of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. from unauthorized use, infringement and counterfeit goods and services,” said SMRI chairman Dean Kinney.

The Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce filed the unfair competition lawsuit in 2008. When it assigned its Sturgis marks to SMRI, the company became the plaintiff.

“Tourism is extremely vital to the economy of the Black Hills, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a crown jewel for the industry,” said board member and longtime Black Hills-area banker John E. Johnson. “Motorcycle tourism in the Black Hills and the Sturgis brand are both at risk if we allow unauthorized use of these valuable marks. This is not something of importance to just Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. but indeed to the hundreds of Black Hills tourism businesses and jobs that exist, in part, because of the worldwide notoriety of the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally.”

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. is the owner of the portfolio of trademarks and service marks related to the August rally in Sturgis, S.D.
