Bio-ShotName: Don Kopach

What position do you play on The K and G Team? Director of Media and Marketing – Long story short, everything you see on Facebook, Twitter,Pinterest, or Google+  I am responsible for. Yes, I actually do get paid to “play” on the internet. I am also in charge of maintaining the V-Twin Blog and the Metric Blog, which consists of product reviews and special interest stories,  as well as advice  collumns, industry news, and event news. My hat rack also includes one covering Sales Support Staff.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in La Porte, Indiana, and about 10 yrs ago I headed south to Bloomington, Indiana. South Central Indiana is a great place to ride a motorcycle.

Tell us about your family: Well to begin with I come from a family of 6, 5 older sisters, and NO I was not spoiled. Between Mom and Dads siblings I have 55 first cousins. Mom was a Registered Nurse so playing sick never worked well.  Dad worked in the Steel Mills near Gary. Our house was always the gathering point for all the relatives because it was right between Moms family and Dads, you never knew who would be downstairs when you woke up, having “Coffee and Rolls” as my wonderful Aunt Dragitza would say. After high school I got my first bike, a 76′ Kawasaki KE 175, a buddy owed me $20 and gave that to me instead. My first street bike came 2 yrs later  – a 1986 Kawasaki Vulcan 750. 3 bikes later I have a 2008 Buell Ulysses XB12X, V-twin power(103hp + 86ft lbs tq) with unbelievable handling – an Adventure Touring Bike.  After my move south, I met my wife, married, and we now have a young daughter.

What is your favorite quote/by whom/ and why? “Pain Heals, Chicks Dig Scars, and Glory – Lasts Forever” Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves) “The Replacements”  It speaks the truth, it isn’t really classy or very inspirational. Or “You’re gonna have to bust us all up”  a friend Chicago 1999 before a bar fight. It’s just a classic from the “King of 1 Liners”

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? Of course getting married and having a beautiful baby is tops, also on my list of accomplishments is founding The Midwest Motorcop Skills Rodeo (5 yrs strong), and having it televised for 2 of the years.

What is your Favorite place in the whole world? One single place is tough to call, how about top 3 – Ireland,  Bolongo Bay Resort St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and definitely wherever my friends and family are.

What is your favorite thing about K and G Cycles?     Being the newest member of The K and G Team, I would have to say so far the amount of products we have available is mind numbing. Working with team members that are on top of their game is a bonus not only for me but for the customers too. K and G Cycles has welcomed me aboard with open arms.

Sons of Anarchy Season 5

What’s happening next for the SAMCRO crew? New leadership, struggles, and roles for many of the members is the prediction. Power shifts make for some great episodes, so I doubt we will be disappointed. There is some major talk of how Jax and Tara will fit into their new positions in the club. Sons of Anarchy creator, Kurt Sutter, spoke about Tara’s role and the upcoming season in a recent interview, saying “The power structure has changed with Clay being out. The bigger issue really is Tara’s new role and her trying to fit in. The guys like Tara, they have respect for Tara, so it’s not like they’re going to feel they’re being disloyal to Gemma by trying to understand Tara’s new role.” The issue this season doesn’t seems to be a lack of support from the guys for Tara. Instead, it’s Tara figuring out how to deal with her own fears. “It’s not so much am I in or am I out this season [with Tara]. It’s ‘OK, I’m in, but who am I in this role?”, Sutter continued. ”We will see the burden of the responsibility land on Tara this season, in terms of Jax’s role and we will see her embrace that responsibility and struggle with how to be that queen for Jax and yet still have all the same fears and doubts and misgivings that she had in the past,” says Sutter. “That stuff doesn’t just go away. It’s just that she’s trying to figure out what to do with that energy.”

Sons of Anarchy Season 5 will also include a number of guest spots and reoccurring roles. You can look forward to seeing Ashley Tisdale, Jimmy Smits, Harold Perrineau, and Billy Brown, just to name a few.

For Opie to get all of that information from Jax, it didn’t make sense that he would be able to rectify that within a couple hours and sit at that table. A second marriage that is failing, a father that is dead, and a club in shambles. What is a guy to do? Well, season 5 will find Opie still trying to wrap his head around what’s going on in his life and whether or not there’s repair to be had. With Opie and Jax and see how that relationship has changed and if you can come back from that.

What new people do you think will drop in on the SAMCRO clan this year? A number of actors who once appeared on The Shield, which Sutter executive-produced, have made their way onto Sons, We have already learned that former ‘NYPD Blue’ star Jimmy Smits and ‘LOST‘s Harold Perrineau would play large, looming roles over the Kurt Sutter series’ fifth outing, but now the ranks have expanded to include…a Disney sweetheart? Also news has surfaced that former ‘High School Musical’ and upcoming ‘Scary Movie 5‘ star Ashley Tisdale has just landed a recurring role in ‘Sons of Anarchy’s fifth season, playing “Emma Jean, a high-priced desirable escort who complicates the club’s life in at least two episodes.” Though only set for two, the role could potentially expand in the future.
Tisdale isn’t the only one recently added to the cast however, as earlier ‘Dexter‘ star Billy Brown will also take a role on the series as August Marks, right-hand man to Harold Perrineau’s major villain character Damon Pope.

Scoops aside, Sutter also shined light on his efforts to produce a prequel to Sons that would explore the story of the first nine members. He’s expressed his desires to produce the show to FX, he said, but it remains on the sidelines for now.

Guardian Bells- Legends Behind the Tradition

You’ve probably heard many different versions of the guardian bell story. There are countless legends that feed into the tradition behind guardian bells. One legend says that gremlins, responsible for making bikers crash, ambushed a fallen biker. The man had toys in his saddlebags that he was planning on giving to his kids, but they spilled out during the fall. The only toy that fell near the man was a bell that he began to ring. Other bikers in a nearby town head the bell and came to his aid. They warded the gremlins off of the man. The biker was so grateful  for their help that he tore off tassels from his saddlebags and attached the remaining bells to the leather. He gave the bells to the men who helped him and told them to attach it to their bikes. If they needed help from the gremlins, they should ring the guardian bell as well. Another legend says that evil road spirits constantly work to put obstacles in front of bikers, even causing mechanical difficulties. The guardian bell will protect you because the spirits will get trapped inside. Then, they drive themselves mad with the constant ringing and eventually fall to the ground, causing potholes. Some say that guardian bells must be given as a gift and others say that they are effective if purchased for yourself or given as a gift. Some say that it is important that an experienced rider gives you the bell because their skill level is passed through the guardian bell as well. Motorcycle Lock and Load!

There is no doubt that motorcycles are an easy target for thieves, especially those who have a plan of attack or a group of equally sticky handed friends available to help. It can be a devastating reality to experience the loss of an item that you have worked so hard to obtain in the first place and more often than not, if you find the bike again it will have already been picked apart or damaged. Here is the good news, there are many ways to protect your bike. Simple steps can be taken to ensure that you don’t walk outside to find an empty parking spot where your buddy used to be.

Buy a motorcycle lock or alarm system. Easy, right? Buying a lock for your bike is a simple and inexpensive way to ward off thieves looking for an easy target. It will deter those acting alone or trying to get away quickly. They probably realize that if they are sitting in a parking lot cutting cables or sawing off a lock, someone will notice them and notify authorities. Which brings us to the next point… If you see someone doing these things, call the police! If you see a group of people carrying a bike or hurriedly throwing it into a trailer or truck, it is probably not a legitimate situation and it wouldn’t hurt to call the authorities to report a suspicious scene.

There are many motorcycle lock designs available. Consider what will work best for you. Simple motorcycle lock designs will just prevent the wheels from moving and sometimes this is enough to stop theft from happening. Other designs will anchor the bike to a post on the ground, but this requires that there is a stationary mount wherever and whenever you choose to park. Alarms can also be installed that throw out a shrill alert when someone tries to move the bike. There are tip sensors on these little gadgets that ward off those attempting to take off with your wheels. There are also combination motorcycle lock/alarm systems available that will set themselves off when motion or shock is detected. So now when someone tries to tamper with your bike, it’ll scream back. Problem solved.

The American Motorcycle Girl’s Cannonball Diary

At K and G Cycles, we salute all women riders! Here is an awesome story of how in the fall of 2010, Cris Sommer Simmons, “the American Motorcycle Girl*”, rode her 1915 Harley-Davidson cross-country from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to Santa Monica, California. In a field of 45 riders, she was one of two women, and the only American, to take on the 3,000 mile pre-1916 Motorcycle Cannonball Cross-Country Endurance Race.

Her daily diary tells a special story of both human and mechanical endeavor.  Riding cross-country on an antique motorcycle presents many challenges, mentally, physically and, of course, technologically.

“Riding onto the Santa Monica Pier on ‘Effie’, my 1915 Harley-Davidson, to the finish of the Motorcycle Cannonball was a highlight of my over 30 years of motorcycling.  I felt as though I was riding on behalf of all the women motorcyclists who came before me and loved to ride. This is my story.”

Biker Fusion 2012 – 5th Annual Event raised $16,000

Hey Gang! This one picture tells a lot about the awesome event Biker Fusion that our hardworking owners, George and Kyle Marakas, were proud to support! The feel-good moments, just kept coming as the dollars were raised for those who have put it on the line for us, our amazing U.S. Soldiers and their families.

Event promoters Carrie Repp of R&R Promotions and Ken Conte of Rise Above Consulting are pleased to announce the success of their “Biker Fusion” fundraiser, held for the fifth time last week as part of Daytona Bike Week festivities. This year’s event had a great showing from the motorcycle industry and supporters, attracting more than 600 guests and raising more than $16,000 for Soldiers’ Angels, a volunteer-led non-profit that provides aid and comfort to active servicemen and women of the U.S. military as well as veterans and their families.

Funds contributed last week bring the total raised during the event’s five-year run to more than $75,000. Conte and Repp expressed gratitude to the event venue, the Doghouse Bar and Grill on Main Street in Daytona, as well as the long list of event sponsors.

“The support we’ve gotten from individuals and the industry as a whole has been amazing,” said Ken Conte, event organizer and owner of Rise Above Consulting. “To be able to bring industry notables, leading companies, and regular riders together in this way, to benefit a great cause, is very gratifying.”

“Once again, the way the community and the industry rally together to benefit those who’ve served our country is just awesome,” said Carrie Repp, event organizer and owner of R&R Promotions. “Our hosts, Dave Perewitz, Paul Yaffe and Steve Broyles did a great job, and we are so honored to have so many people come out to help veterans, those actively serving, and their families.”

Highlights included an appearance by Victory Motorcycles special guest Sergeant Major Harold G. Overstreet, USMC retired, the 12th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (1991-1995), as well as a live auction of a variety of products from sponsors and supporters.

Fusion supporters also witnessed the unveiling of a custom Victory Motorcycles ride designed for legendary Marine and Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey, a.k.a. “The Gunny.” Gunny’s new ride was custom designed and painted by the Victory Industrial Design staff. Polaris Motorcycles built this bike for him to ride in Daytona and at future military support rides.

Stretched Chopper Gas Tank for Custom Frames

Frame requirements: 4″ stretch in the front down tubes, 3″ minimum stretch in the backbone, Backbone O.D. cannot exceed 1 3/4″.

Mounting brackets are rubber isolated to prevent vibration cracks.  Weld-to-frame brackets recess in the bottom of the tank for a hidden look.  Tapped 3/8-24 NPT at rear of tank for gas crossover line (not included).  Use with 13/16″ (22 mm) fuel valve.

Make your oil changes easier with this Oil Filter Adapter Kit for Big Twin and Sportsters

Stop looking around, this Universal Oil Filter Adapter makes oil filter installation a snap.  Versatile adapter will work with Big Twin with exhaust pipes around the inside or outside of the frame as well as on Sportster models.  Standard clamp type fittings are included on the oil filter bracket.  For installation approximately 5 feet of 3/8″ oil line, screwdriver, 1/2″ wrench and a sharp knife are needed.  Includes oil filter.  Chrome Plated Adapter Kit.  Fits Big Twin & Sportster (except Twin Cam), all years.

4 quart capacity.  Can be used with the OE metal canister-type oil filter holder but for easy maintenance, use or drop-in oil filter 87110.
