Ditch those boring old Gauges, install custom ones from Dakota Digital

Category : MC News

Whether you are building a custom ride or simply want to add a new touch to your bike, you need to consider Dakota Digital gauges. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) has a great selection of Dakota Digital gauges sure to fit your application.

Dakota DigitaDakota-Digital-DDH3000cl1l has been manufacturing the highest quality instrumentation and specialty electronics for custom cars, trucks, and motorcycles for over 25 years at the facility they call home, located in the heartland of the country, on the outskirts of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Home is where nearly all products are designed, developed and manufactured from start to finish…right here in the USA by folks who care about the products they sell and the thousands of customers that use them. With applications for most Harley-Davidson models, as well as plenty of custom choices too, it is no wonder Dakota Digital is leading the way in aftermarket instruments. Night time visibility on all Dakota Digital gauges will be excellent. Daytime visibility will depend on the application. Dakota Digital uses high contrast teal displays with non-glare lenses to provide the best daytime visibility possible. On bar mount systems and gauges mounted facing back toward the rider visibility is good at all times. Dash mount systems that face straight up into the sun will have lesser visibility when the sun is high and shining directly on the gauge. It can still be read but visibility under these conditions is slightly reduced. For best overall visibility, the company recommends either Blue or Teal back lighting. these are more than simple 1 function instruments too. You have the ability to display 7 gauge readings in the LCD Message Centers in the Speedometer and Tachometer (Speed, RPM, Volts, Fuel, Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, and Air Temp), as well as Miles to Empty and performance readouts (0-60 speed and time as well as  ¼ mile speed and time). Not convinced you need these just yet? What if I tell you they are plug and play, and you can have your current mileage programmed into them so you can keep track of your true miles.

When purchasing Dakota Digital products, you can rest assured you are not only getting the best products, but also the best service and support available. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) only sells the best of the best, and that is why you can purchase Dakota Digital products here.

Throughout the month of April, motorcyclists everywhere celebrate the thrill of riding during AMA Go Ride! Month. Plus there are weekly contests with prizes from Helmetlok and gift cards from BikeBandit.com. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) applauds The AMA for being the driving force behind the annual return of the season and the support it gives all of us.

A Major Victory for Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc.

Category : MC News

smriIn what seemed like a never ending battle, it looks as though The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and all of its registered trademarks will remain protected from those looking to ride the coat tails of the larger than life entity. In recent weeks, K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) learned of the news and applauded the efforts the ones responsible for the hard work and determination to see this through.

“Legal system continues to support SMRi and its legal right to protect the registered Sturgis® trademarks”

Sturgis, SD (March 2013)- Officials with the non-profit Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. announced today that they are pleased to have prevailed over every legal action thus far in their ongoing effort to protect the Sturgis® trademarks against infringing users.
A recommendation recently passed down by U.S. Magistrate Judge John E. Simko does not deny or even recommend denying the right for SMRi to continue to use the legal Sturgis® trademarks it has have been entrusted to protect. This follows two other rulings in recent years that were in favor of SMRi, including a judgement against an entity that billed itself as the “Little Sturgis Rally.” “Without the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, there could be no ‘Little Sturgis Rally.’ Without SMRi, organizers of that event would have profited from the work our local community members have done over decades, would have done so at no cost, and would have been under no obligation to make any contribution to the community of Sturgis and its people.” Said SMRi board member Ross Lamphere.
In another case, just prior to the 2011 Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM), a motion for injunctive relief was filed by Rushmore Photos and Gifts against SMRi that attempted to derail the group’s legal right to defend its federal trademarks. SMRI was successful in having that injunction denied. The legal system and local businesses have generally and repeatedly supported the idea of SMRi benefiting the local economy as a benevolent agency tasked with safeguarding the Sturgis® trademarks for the community and people of Sturgis.
“SMRi, through our volunteer board, is charged with promoting and protecting the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM), while providing a charitable return for the greater Sturgis area. Part of that responsibility is to protect the intellectual property of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. from unauthorized use, infringement and counterfeit goods and services.” said Dean Kinney, Chairman of the SMRi board.
sturgis 2013SMRi has been tasked with protecting Rally-related trademarks for the greater good of the Sturgis community. If the trademarks are deemed to be in the public domain, royalties currently collected from the use will stop. The funds SMRi and the trademarks currently generate go to supporting the Rally and local entities such as the ones funded earlier this year by Sturgis Rally Charities. Over the last two years SMRi has donated over $100,000 to local charities and will continue it’s dedication to supporting the local community.
Longtime Black Hills-area business woman Karen Simmons-Parks, a volunteer board member of SMRi, said the group is committed to protecting the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM). “Motorcycle tourism in the Black Hills and the Sturgis® brand are both at risk if we allow unauthorized use of these valuable marks. It is our responsibility as board members to protect those marks, which is typical of any mark. The Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM) and its worldwide notoriety, in large part, supports the local economy, and the Sturgis trademarks and brand are a significant part of that equation. It is obvious that the legal system continues to support SMRi’s legal right to protect the trademarks it owns, and we intend on continuing to do so for the good of the overall community.”
About SMRi:
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, inc. (SMRi) is a South Dakota not-for-profit organization with no owners or shareholders and a volunteer board. The group’s primarily responsibilities are to promote, grow and strengthen the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM) and provide a charitable return for the greater Sturgis area through the development of a licensing program related to the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM). The board positions represent a variety of organizations and interests in the Sturgis area, including the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Sturgis, Sturgis-area commercial property owners.

Again, K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) would like to say congratulations on this victory for the SMRI Organization, and everyone involved.

My First Time at The V-Twin Motorcycle Expo in Cincinnati

Category : MC News

I finally made it to thev-twin expo V-Twin Motorcycle Expo in Cincinnati, OH this year, and saw some really cool stuff I am going to share with you and feature in the upcoming weeks. Not knowing what to expect, I went with my fellow K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) Team with all my senses on high alert and grabbed as much product literature and “Swag” as I could carry. You name it, it was there…. Killer Audio Upgrades, Big Inch Front ends, Innovative Helmet Designs, Wicked Custom Product Display Bikes, and much, much more. I figure the funnest way to highlight some of the products is to do a sort of “Top 5 List”. So here goes my rendition in no particular order.

5) The Biker Bar – biker-bar1an amazing system that simplifies trailering your motorcycle by yourself. There is no need for assistance. Take your bike, ditch the straps. The Biker Bar makes loading and unloading fast by securely stabilizing your motorcycle with a solid steel clamping bar. A neoprene-lined, removable, clamping bar attaches to your bike frame in a few seconds without a scratch. The trailer mounted plate with automatic latches locks down the bike in seconds, eliminating the need for tie down straps. This system keeps your bike locked in an upright position, doesn’t compress your suspension, won’t make you crawl under the trailer to install the latch system, can be installed in your garage to ensure safe storage of your bike, and works on all Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

4) Cobra USA ECobra fender exit exhaustxhaust Center Pro Slip-On Muffler – Providing an industry first design, this center-port exhaust offers superior performance via a unique 2-into-1 design. Both mufflers join at the rear beneath the fender for center port exhaust location . Slips on as a single unit to the stock head pipes (or Cobra PowrPort Dual, or True Dual head pipes) Single, polished and chromed steel, big mouthed exhaust tip finished with a perfectly rolled edge gives your bike one of a kind, progressive look. The Constant velocity baffles used for this set-up are not removable. Will not work with trailer hitches.

battery tender3) This item is so new, I don’t even have a picture for reference, plus I am letting the “Cat out of The Bag” and I can not wait to get my hands on one of these. Battery Tender, the name we all trust to keep our batteries charged up, ready to go when we are, is bringing to market in the next 60 days, a Battery Life and Voltage meter that is about as big as my thumb,  and plugs into the pigtail we plug the wall unit into. An LCD screen displays output numbers, and there is even an L.E.D. light display similar to the wall unit to alert you should your output levels drop.

2) James Clark was a james gasketsmotorcycle enthusiast with a life-long passion for riding, and began wrenching on his own and friends bikes in his parents garage early on. He even went so far as to open his own motorcycle repair shop, “Chino’s” in Fremont, California. Being dissatisfied with the gaskets that he found available, James began to cultivate his own ideas for improving sealing technology. In 1977 James started the James Motorcycle Parts Company. Paying close attention to quality and fit, quickly gained him a reputation for producing superior gaskets and seals. James began supplying gaskets and complete rebuild kits for engine and transmission overhauls for a variety of Harley-Davidson models to an ever-growing group of enthusiasts and was credited with providing the much-needed sealing solution for the American V-Twin. In 1979 James Gaskets, Inc. was officially born, offering the most complete product line of Harley-Davidson aftermarket gaskets and seals in the industry. A superior product born in a garage because a man loved motorcycles.

1) Goodridge Flugoodridge-logo1id Transfer Systems ( or High Performance Brake Lines) is now offering a totally new way to install custom brake lines on your bike. Buildaline products are designed to allow the flexibility to install custom length and finish lines to your ride, making it a one of a kind look. Available in 4 different kits to cover just about any size span you need, these kits are about as simple as they come. Also when you purchase the products made by Goodridge, you know you are buying from the industry leader so your money is well spent.

For the first time in nearly 8 years in the Motorcycle Industry, I attended the V-Twin Motorcycle Expo in Cincinnati. I walked out of there with a list of products I think the Customers of K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) will want for their bikes. At this time some of them are not available, and for the others I plan to do some solo features on in the future. Still some we are not a dealer for yet so we have to set up those accounts, but as soon as we determine the best pricing for you, we will release them.

The 1190RS is the first production bike produced by the company, which plans to build only 100 of the units. EBR  reportedly has about 30 dealerships in the United States standing by to take delivery of the much anticipated return of Mr. Buell’s technological masterpieces.

Not only does this 1190RSmean the return of high performance American street bikes, it also means job creation in a time when many companies are down-sizing or moving operations to less-expensive foreign facilities. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) is proud to welcome back Erik Buell and EBR so you may experience his “Metal Wizardry” at a dealership near you.

George Smith – What does that name mean to you?

Category : Great Products, MC News

In the early 5george_lathe0′s, George Smith was a motorcycle drag racer dominating the strips around the Chicagoland area, as well as setting speed records at Bonneville. His quest for speed and the desire to make his motorcycle faster led to the discovery there were no aftermarket companies in the “Go Fast” business. Smith along with pal Stanley Stankos ended up having to make the much needed parts in the basement of his Blue Island , IL home. Thus laying the foundation for what would become S & S Cycles, the best know company in the high performance V-Twin aftermarket. In 1958(many moons before K and G Cycles - www.kandgcycles.com – was born) S & S Cycles was launched and the road to V-Twin performance was opened for the masses. The first official product offered by the pair(Smith and Stankos) was a set of light weight aluminum pushrods that converted hydraulic tappets to solid lifters. This upgrade resulted in the ability to operate at higher rpm resulting in more available power. A year later Stankos sold his share of the business to Smith and his wife Marjorie and the 2 never looked back. A decade later their basement could no longer contain the demands placed on the company so operations were moved to Viola, WI in 1969 after finding their spot in “God’s Country”.

So often when we heS & S logoar S&S we automatically think of the line of performance carburetors which from their introduction in 1967 have had one intent -” delivering a much simpler and more cost effective way to go fast.” General carburetor mechanics is no secret, but S&S sure seems to have figured out what is needed to get the biggest return. Being known industry wide for his significant contributions to V-Twin performance, George Smith was summoned in 1970 to help the Harley-Davidson sponsored streamliner achieve a 265.492 mph land speed record, and earned himself the title of “Fuel Wizard” for his knowledge of nitro burning engine.

The mid-seventies would see the introduction of the famed “Sidewinder” kit, a ground breaking product that allowed almost any repair shop to build big inch high performance engines, without the expense and time needed to design and fabricate special parts, these kits were complete, containing eveything needed to finish the job. As always, Smith was providing simple yet efficient solutions to the problems of building large displacement Harley-Davidson motors. Now the S&S customer could order stroker flywheels, big bore cylinders, pistons, and many related parts. The “Sidewinder” motor had been born.

The coming yeS&S Marjoiears would be filled with win after win, the setting of land speed records ( some which still hold to this day), but also loss. In 1980 George Smith passed away, but the story doesn’t end there, Marge’s strong will, leadership, and knowledge kept the company on track and growing well into the 1990′s. Having been an important part of the company, a large portion of the credit for the success of S&S® Cycle belongs to Marge Smith. A fact that is often overlooked, is that Marge Smith was a full partner in the business with her husband George. George’s technical skill and his accomplishments at the race track often overshadow her contributions to the business. Mrs. S,ith was a rider herself, so she was no stranger to the sport or the people who pursue it. She definitely pulled her own weight as she took care of the office chores and did the bookkeeping, but she also worked in the shop and could talk tech with the best of them. Long time S&S customers recall her with fondness and respect, and more than a few chauvinistic male callers were often surprised and perhaps a little chagrined to have their technical problems solved over the phone for them by a woman. Which I am sure left Marge with the biggest smile and best feeling knowing “The First Lady of Fast Motorcycles”  had just schooled a big bad biker, and not missed a beat the whole way. Seven years after her passing in 1990, Marjorie Smith and George Smith were inducted into the Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1997. In April 2003, S&S saluted its founders with the 145 Tribute, a motorcycle project that also marked S&S’s 45th anniversary. The tribute recognized Marjorie and George Smith as pioneers who played an integral part in the evolution of the V-twin motorcycle market.

Nuefi s n smerous awards and innovations would befall S&S Cycles for years to come including Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year for Relentless R&D,  the quickest V-twin in AHDRA Prostock(2002) with a record of 7.47 seconds and 178 mph in the quarter mile, a record 500,000th Super Shorty carburetor produced in 2004, 2 new motor designs, and being awarded the contract to supply the motors for Harley-Davidson “Reman Motor” program. All in all S&S is a phenomenal success story based on the passion for speed, and K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) is proud to offer you the full line of S&S products from complete engines, exhaust, cams, and other performance enhancing products  to complete your transformation from humdrum to holy cow with time tested, quality American-made products. Thank you for your hard work and dedication Marjorie and George Smith and Stanley Stankos so we may improve our bikes performance.

Corporate America Feels our Pain-Allstate launches “O.N.E.”

Category : MC News

In the increaallstate 1singly challenging world of Motorcycling it is exciting to see Corporate America joining the fight to increase our visibility.  To help standardize warning signs for motorcycle safety and reduce the number of motorcycle crashes at intersections involving other vehicles, Allstate is working with traffic authorities to permanently install motorcycle warning signs in more than 30 U.S. cities this year. In order to bring awareness and help reduce the incidences of motorcycle crashes, the Illinois based insurance company has installed warning signs on dangerous Chicago intersections taking the total number to 12. Warning signs have been installed at the corners of West Ohio Street and North State Street, and North Kedzie Avenue and West Fullerton Avenue, in addition to the intersections of Southwest Highway and West 11th Street, West 159th Street and Highway 45, West Wolf Road and State Street, and South Archer Avenue and Bell Road.. This move is part of the Once is Never Enough program, which has already installed signs in several other major cities. Ultimately, Allstate hopes to establish a standard warning sign that can be used and recognized across the country. The first “Watch for Motorcycles” signs were recently installed in OH, GA, TX, IL, MD, MI, PA, TN, MO, SC & OR.

Allstate encourages drivers to look twice for motorcycles, and the yellow diamond-shaped signs were designed to remind them to do just that. The warning sign was created following two years of development, which included more than 100 temporary installations in various U.S. cities between 2010 and 2011. Additionally, Allstate with the help of a handful of celebrity bikers is encouraging people to visit the Allstate Motorcycle Facebook page and take the O.N.E.(Once is Never Enough) Pledge – committing to look twice for motorcycles at intersections – and share with at least one other person to spread the message. To take the O.N.E. Pledge and help make the world a better place to ride, visit www.facebook.com/AllstateMotorcycle.

It is great to see Big Business looking out for the Motorcycling Community, rather than vilifying those that ride. Hopefully their efforts will make a difference and the warning sign will become a standard around the globe. Thank you to Allstate from everyone here at K and G Cycles(www.kandgcycles,com) for creating this campaign and trying to make a difference.

Boardwalk-Victory’s latest Salvo in the Quest for Dominance

Category : MC News

Victory says sales are2 victory boardwalks up 20 percent, year-over-year, for the last three years! And while the iron is hot, the Minnesota-based company keeps firing off new models, the latest of which is the 2013 Boardwalk. Built on Victory’s benchmark 106-inch Freedom V-Twin and steel-tube-frame platform, the Boardwalk is aimed directly at Harley-Davidson’s Softail Deluxe. With gangster whitewalls tucked beneath full-coverage steel fenders and a wide beach bar to showcase one’s sculpted backbone to best effect, this one’s for urban profiling more than serious traveling, even though it’s worthy of both.

You would have to work pretty hard not to have fun riding around hilly back roads or the bumpy, twisty roads on Boardwalk. The fat Metzeler whitewalls—a 130 front and 150 rear on 16-inch spoke wheels go along well with the program and allow a good amount of lean angle before the floorboards start to augur in. Don’t worry that the 300mm front brake’s not so powerful, because the rear 300mm brake hauls the Boardwalk to a standstill very easily. It just takes a little getting used to.

Boardwalks cowhite boardwalkunter-balanced engine bolted solidly in place, feels like a structurally sound platform whose on which it’s 675 dry weight is easy to maneuver thanks to it’s wide beach bar. The Freedom 106 has a pretty easy time moving that weight around too, with Dyno runs revealing 96 foot-pounds of torque at 2920 rpm and 81 horses at 4810 rpm. Even warmer days like we had this past summer don’t bother  the 1731cc V-Twin , thanks to the hefty five-quart oil capacity and a big oil cooler located ahead of the crankcase.

Housing those super wide beach bars does mean at higher speeds you enter into an aerodynamic grudge match, 65 mph registers a nice, relaxing 2400 rpm on the digital tach that lives with a clock and other functions. Crank it up much more and you will be visiting the dealer for one of their are accessory Lock & Ride windshields. Also available for the Boardwalk models are saddlebags and sissy bars, not to mention heated grips and cruise control. And should you decide this bike won’t be just a “Boulevard Baby” the new enlarged, 4.7-gallon gas tank should give the bike considerable cruising range.

Victory continuesvictory logo its quest for heavyweight supremacy, which means a new model every six months. In keeping with the brands “Take-the-fight-to-Milwaukee” posturing, there’s even a bold new logo on the Boardwalk sporting a big red “V” to let people know what kind of motorcycle that was that just went by. Retailing for around $15,499 in Solid Black and around $15,899 in Solid Pearl White ($250 more in California), the Boardwalk is a legitimate and less-expensive competitor for Harley’s Softail Deluxe.

Update: Tsunami’s Drifter finds a New Home

Category : MC News

On March 11th, 2011 one of the most powerful recorded earthquakes struck the Land of The Rising Sun, approximately 43 miles east of the island nation and at a depth of approximately 20 miles. As if the earthquake wasn’t horrible enough what would follow proved to even deadlier, a powerful tsunami bringing in waves as high as 133 feet, and propelling them almost 6 miles inland. The magnitude of this epic event is believed to have moved the main island as much as 8 feet east, and shifted the Earth’s axis between 4 and 10 inches.

As with any natural tsunami containerdisaster many stories of survival, tragedy, and overall loss come to light, but few have as interesting of an outcome as a motorcycle that made a year long, 4,000 plus mile journey to a remote island in Canada. After discovering a weathered storage container that had washed ashore, Peter Mark looked inside and found the 2004 Harley-Davidson Night Train belonging to Ikuo Yokoyama  (the Japaneese license plate was still attached and lead to the owner)and let him know his bike had made it to Canada. Numerous offers of restoration and reuniting the storied bike with it’s owner were declined with Yokoyama stating,“Since the motorcycle was recovered, I have discussed with many people about what to do with it. I would be delighted if it could be preserved in its current condition and exhibited to the many visitors to the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to a tragedy that claimed thousands of lives. I am very grateful to Harley-Davidson for offering me an opportunity to visit the museum, and I would like to do that when things have calmed down. At the same time, I would like to meet Peter, who recovered my motorcycle, to express my gratitude. Finally, I would like to thank all people around the world once again for their wholehearted support of the areas hit by the earthquake and Tsunami. I would like to ask them to help convey messages from the Japanese people about the tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which was a disaster of historic proportions.”

Last Wednesday Oinside containerctober 24, The Harley-Davidson Museum located in Milwaukee, WI unveiled a special display featuring Ikuo Yokoyama’s Harley that drifted for more than a year across the Pacific Ocean following the tragic tsunami that devastated parts of northern Japan in March of 2011. The 2004 Harley-Davidson FXSTB  Night Train, recovered off the coast of British Columbia by Peter Mark, is being displayed at Yokoyama’s request. He asked to have the motorcycle preserved in its current condition and displayed at the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Still struggling to rebuild his life in the aftermath of the disaster, Yokoyama declined Harley-Davidson’s offer to return the bike to him, although he was grateful for the offer and touched by the outpouring of support from Harley riders around the world. This remarkable story of the motorcycle’s survival and recovery made international headlines after Mark found it washed ashore on a remote beach on British Columbia’s Graham Island at low tide. He discovered the motorcycle, still bearing its Japanese license plate, in a container where the bike was being stored by Yokoyama.

If tsunamiharley1you would like to see this incredible survivor and more fascinating bikes, visit The Harley-Davidson Museum, Milwaukee , WI open daily from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., with the exception of Thursday, when it is open until 8 p.m.

Motorcycle Safety Foundations Helpful Tips

Category : MC News

While deciding on the material to present to you today, I came across this worthy bit on The Motorcycle Safety Foundations website -  www.msf-usa.org – please share this with all the “Cage Dwellers” you know.

QUICK TIPS: Ten Things All Car & Truck Drivers Should Know About Motorcyclesmsf keychain
1. There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don’t “recognize” a motorcycle; they ignore it (usually unintentionally). Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection.
2. Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle’s speed. When checking traffic to turn at an intersection or into (or out of) a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks.
3. Because of its small size, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots (door/roof pillars) or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc). Take an extra moment to thoroughly check traffic, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections.
4. Because of its small size a motorcycle may seem to be moving faster than it really is. Don’t assume all motorcyclists are speed demons.
5. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.
6. Turn signals on a motorcycle usually are not self-canceling, thus some riders, (especially beginners) sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle’s signal is for real.
7. Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them.
8. Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle’s better characteristics, especially at slower speeds and with good road conditions, but don’t expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way.
9. Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly difficult. Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle because it can’t always stop “on a dime.”
10. When a motorcycle is in motion, don’t think of it as motorcycle; think of it as a person.
