Give your Exhaust a Better Look

 I have always wondered why the Big Guys in Milwaukee never finished the exhaust on the touring bikes. What I am referring to is the space between the heat shields that shows the actual head pipe. Having recently purchased an Electra Glide Classic, I am even more aware this situation and have found a cure that doesn’t entail replacing the entire exhaust system. Since I work here at K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) I have access to all the parts I can handle, and then some, so it was pretty easy to find the solution to my concern. Kuryakyn makes what they call the Bridge The Gap Heat Shield.

 The Bridge TKuryakyn Heat Shield Bridge TR-496986he Gap Heat Shield is designed to fill the space between the stock exhaust heat shields on the Touring Family bikes from H-D made from 1993 – 2007. This piece is an exact fit that covers the ugly exposed section of head pipe on stock exhaust set ups. With the popularity of Slip-Ons these days (which my bike happens to have) it is no wonder somebody designed a cover to hide that section of exhaust, and let that company be Kuryakyn. Long known for their incredible chroming process and near OEM fit, the team of Engineers responsible for this heat shield knocked it out of the park. Who Controls your ride? Stock? Chrome? Black?

As we all know by now, you can’t just change one accessory, especially when it comes to your controls. It really doesn’t make much sense to only change out your hand grips and leave your stock levers or switch housings to bring down the property value. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) believes just like those good ‘ole potato chips, you can’t stop at one accessory. Today we are are going to focus on the controls, more specifically the control levers, switch housings, and the switches themselves.

So you changeChrome Switch Housings 26-0796d the hand grips on your ride, and they look great, but there is something missing… you need to finish the job. There is nothing more disappointing than seeing a sweet bike that only has part of the controls customized. It reminds me of a Corvette that has ground effects installed but the were left unpainted.  Switch housings would be the next logical choice when it comes to completing the transformation. For the most part the stock black housings do not compliment new grips very well unless they are black. With that being said, many people upgrade to a Chrome Switch Housing to accent the new grips. A fairly easy install, Switch Housing upgrades go a long way to give you a finished, custom look to your controls that will have you wondering,”Why didn’t I do this before?”.

You aren’t done just yet! Thichrome switxhess next step is one of personal preference – Do I leave the switches black, or do I install chrome switches? My personal feel is to leave them black as it adds a nice bit of contrast to the chrome. It also is easier to read the switches at a glance, in the event you have an Alzheimer’s moment. If you are changing out your switch housings and want to make the move to chrome, there is no better time to do so. A word of warning, the switch replacement can be a tough job, so you should allow ample time to complete this upgrade. Chrome Switches add a sleek look to your handlebar mounted controls, and will leave the others envious.

 Roundinglevers CP Malice out your controlled accessory swap is the levers. The levers will be the cherry on top, but keep in mind there are about as many lever choices as there are small town diners on the list of “Must See” places. Again, the colors most readily available are Black and Chrome, however if you are wanting to go total custom, you should be able to take any lever to a local powder coater and have any color or finish applied. Levers can set the tone for the bike since often the controls are one of the first areas you notice on the bike or don’t notice. Levers can also increase your riding comfort by. There are levers available in reduced pull style, more ergonomically correct designs, as well as what one might refer to as “Self Defense” levers.

 All in all, changing a mere 25% your controls give you an unfinished, hap hazard look when you could be a shining star instead. For ease of transformation, an accessory install should be plotted out, and full advantage taken of your downtime. Home Maintenance Tools everyone should have.

Are you tired of paying the high price for the dealership to service your bike? Have you always been good with a wrench? With the right tools, just about everyone can perform the routine maintenance a motorcycle requires. Here at K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) we like to get our hands dirty and wrench on our rides too. It’s even more enjoyable when we have the right tools.  Aside from a basic set of hand tools, you will need the following “special” tools, because they make performing services at home worth the effort.

1) You will need an ocup style filter wrench 89304 is designed to make home service easieril filter wrench, preferably a cup style filter wrench because they are easiest to operate, and best of all don’t bust your knuckles. Part # 89304 is just that, a cup filter wrench that works on most H-D oil filters. Set up to accept a 3/8″ drive ratchet or extension, this allows you enough leverage to easily remove the filter. An added benefit of the cup is it can prevent us from getting burned. If we are following the manufacturers recommendations, the motor should be at operating temperature and if we use other tools designed for filter removal, it can be a very warm area. The cup style filter is a must have for any do-it-yourself rider.

2) You needoil filter funnel 89311, keeps your oil out of those impossible places to need something to direct that oil as it pours out of the filter. There is nothing more frustrating than getting the filter replaced, having everything cleaned up, only to see oil dripping from the frame and filter area. Get yourself one of these Oil Filter Funnels designed to remove the dripping oil from the filter as you remove it. By funneling the oil away from the filter, it is also kept off the frame and out of all those other hiding places. Let’s face it, there is nothing worse than getting finished with your service, getting your bike cleaned up, and seeing oil on the floor. With this funnel, your days of dealing with the ritualistic oil spill are gone.

3) Now that slim oil drain 16-0585 is your new best frined.you have an easier way to remove that filter and channel the oil away from the bike, you will need a convenient place to catch that oil, and the oil from the engine, trans, and primary. Part # 16-0585 takes care of that. This Oil Drain Reservoir measures approximately 21″ long, 12″ wide, and 4″ deep, and holds a whopping 2.5 gallons of fluid. For pure convenience, there is an upper deck that is slanted at just the right angle to allow the oil filter to drain, hassle free. Another built in feature is the drain neck and cap that permits easy disposal of the used oil. Sloping from the four corners to the center hole, drainage is handled in a smooth and efficient manner. What’s the saying, ” Good things come in small packages.” ? This is certainly one of those small packages.

The last scable oiler 16-0686 is a great tool to insure your cables never bind againtandard you should have is this great Cable Oiler. Part of any good maintenance plan is lubing the cables, and this Cable Oiler (Part # 16-0686) tackles the task by directing the lubricant into the core of the cable. We all know how much of a drag it is when our cables bind up because they haven’t been properly lubricated. Now you have the ability to prevent that.

 Servicing your bike isn’t that difficult, especially if you have the right tools for the job. Big Roadside help in a small package! Portable Tire Repair

Flat tires stink, especialltire-repair-kit packs small but is a huge aid when you need ity when you are in the middle of a great ride. About a year ago, I was on a ride with some friends, and after having a great lunch and some good laughs, we returned to the bikes to start on the next leg of the ride. After doing a pre-ride walk around (TCLOCS inspired) I noticed my rear tire was flat. Well we set to repairing the tire and after about 20 minutes or so, the job was done and we were able to get back on the road. Not being one to push my luck too hard, at our next stop I made a call to my local shop to schedule a new tire install.
