Hibernation Preparation

Category : Tech Stuff

Hibernation Preperation  As the end of summer “officially” nears, for many it is time to start the ritual of “Hibernation Preparation” so our bikes can have a restful winter. We may not think it, but there is a laundry list involved in getting our bikes ready for the long slumber. If you ask 100 people you will get 100 different answers on the best ways to prepare your bike for winter storage and they will range from simply putting the bike in the corner of the garage, clearing a spot out in the shed, or bringing the bike in the house. As that may do for some, there is much more to consider. Below is a list of some things when done prior to storage, will help keep your bike healthier and ready to go when called upon.

1) Detail the bike as you would any other day, making sure you apply an extra coat of wax or two. Using a good quality wax will yield better results with longer lasting protection. You may think “Why would I detail it now, when I am just going to have to do the same come Spring?” Simple answer – It will need just a quick wipe down and then you’ll be ready to go with a bike that is standing tall.

2) Plug it in. A battery tender that is. Tenders keep the battery fully charged and since most of them are using smart technology you don’t have to worry about it being over charged, swelling, or boiling. Battery tenders have circuitry built in that monitors battery charge level and will maintain peak levels. One added bonus is a lot of companies offer the tenders with a harness that bolts to the battery terminals as well as one with alligator clips so you can actually service 2 batteries.(If we go out of town over the winter months we will hook it up to the vehicle we leave behind with the spare harness.)

3) Don’t let the fuel sour. Adding a fuel stabilizer to a full tank of gas prevents gasoline breakdown during storage, and cleans, lubricates and maintains fuel pumps, carburetors, fuel injectors and compression rings.

4) Feed your sleeping giant. Check and top off your fluid levels if needed. This topic seems to have different sides. Service the bike before storage so you know all the fluids are fresh and topped off or service it in the spring so you start the season fresh. Neither belief is wrong, but a piece of advice if your ride is ready for a service, get it done in the fall so you don’t have to fight the rush in the spring. For those of you interested there are oil stabilizers available that help prevent oil breakdown too.

5) Lastly, cover the bike for its lengthy slumber. A good indoor storage cover is a great investment, usually made of soft cotton, it won’t scratch like a vinyl tarp will. Additionally most have an elastic band keeping the bottom snug, virtually eliminating dust and dirt intrusion. During down time it is never bad to remove the cover to install a new piece of chrome or new accessory.

Sure this isn’t everything you can do to store a motorcycle, but it is a great start and should have you ready to roll the first nice spring day. One last piece of advice, as tempting as it is, avoid going out to the garage and starting your bike to hear it or let your buddies hear it. The main reason for this is the charging system on most bikes doesn’t come alive till 2200-2500 rpm’s, so all you are doing is draining the battery. Celebrity Bikers – Fact or Fiction?

Category : Fun Stuff

dierks bentley What do we think of when we hear the words “Celebrity Biker”?  We often wonder if that person is riding for publicity or if they are really into the sport. The answer is both, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some of you may disagree but let’s look at both sides of the argument. Part-timers is what we’ll call the publicity seekers and Full-timers is what we’ll call the others. Realistically we should embrace both groups for shining the spotlight on the sport which we hold so near and dear. All of us at K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles,com) want to applaud them for bringing more attention to our way of life.

Part-timers tend to be the individuals that want that career bolstering photo op, or want to be seen as a wild, free-spirited person. Some choose it as a mid-life crisis type event. Yet others use their fortune to collect and preserve a part of history, most notably Jay Leno, Billy Joel, Malcolm Forbes, and Mike Wolfe just to name a few. One of the most popular Part-timers is none other than our beloved Arthur Fonzarelli(from the 1970′s sitcom “Happy Days”) – Fonzie, played by Henry Winkler, admitted the only actual riding he has ever done was a “Ride up The Cunningham’s driveway during the credits” the rest of the time whenever you saw him “riding” the bikes were  mounted on a piece of wood with wheels to make it look like he was riding . (Ah good ole’ Cinematic Magic. I’m going to have to go and watch some old episodes and see if I can spot the trickery) There are numerous other TV based cyclists that never rode unless it was mounted on the camera trailer. Other Part-timers may be looking to endorse a product, make a special appearance, or simply want to be seen in the right spot with the right crowd. Overall, whatever their motive, their mug brings motorcycling to a whole new group.

Full-timers is a bigger category ranging from those that choose it as a form of therapy, ones that simply enjoy its basic form, and still more that tie themselves with a charity to be an attraction for fundraising and attention for the cause.  By merely slipping on a full face helmet, celebrities are just another motorcycle rider going down the road. Instant anonymity, at least for a little while. There is a story coming out of Spain about a fellow who ran out of gas and a motorcyclist stopped to give him a hand. The rider looked familiar to the stranded fellow who finally inquired about his identity after accepting a lift into town. The rider under the helmet? None other than King Juan Carlos of Spain out for a ride alone on his motorcycle. Just like you and I, many regardless of their status, live for the two-wheeled experience. Sure so the big brands can say “Joe Actor, or Molly Musician rides our brand”, they often will gift a motorcycle to celebrities, but there are some that prefer classics no longer available from many different manufacturers.

Just like you and I enjoy our anonymity, so do the celebrities when it befalls them, but when they want to use their powers for good, they go BIG! Listed below are some celebrities and how they spend time on a motorcycle.

Neil Peart – Drummer for the Canadian Rock Trio RUSH, used motorcycling as a tool to mourn and reflect his recent family tragedies. With in a 10 month time frame, Peart had lost his daughter in an automobile accident and shortly after lost his wife to cancer. Telling his band mates to consider him retired, Peart set off on a 4 leg,  55,000 mile journey inside his soul while traveling extensively through North and South America, resulting in the critically acclaimed book - Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road, the book was a chronicle of his geographical and emotional journey.  Followed by a book detailing a concert tour from behind his drums and from the seat of his BMW motorcycle he rode from show to show: Roadshow: Landscape With Drums, A Concert Tour By Motorcycle

Kyle Petty – Former NASCAR driver hosts The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America to benefit children’s causes, which since its founding in 2000 has raised over $14 Million, created 2 Victory Junction Gang Camps, where nearly 5,000 children with life threatening or chronic illnesses find hope, laughter, friendship and adventure every year.

Dierks Bentley – Hosts The Miles & Music For Kids Celebrity Motorcycle Ride and Concert, raises money for The Children’s Miracle Networks Hospitals across the U.S. This event has raised more than $1.6 Million in the past 6 years.

This is a mere sample of the contributions motorcycling celebrities make today, there are far to many for me to begin to list . As you see, when it comes right down to it, celebrities still face the challenges we do, and can be as giving and devoted to charity too. I think the common thread is the love of 2 wheels and what it does for each and every one of us. Whether its the excitement of carving up the turns, twisting the throttle a little more, the camaraderie found amongst the friends in your riding group, the mental release from taking the long way home, or the smile on the face of the child waving to you as you ride by. Motorcycling takes us all to another place, allowing us to realize our own little slice of Nirvana, so it is really no big surprise to find as a whole, The Motorcycling Community (celebrity or not) is very generous, especially when it comes to kids.

Security Measures

Category : Great Products

how do you keep your bike secure? With vehicle theft on the rise, what are you doing to keep your bike safe? I know what you’ll say, “My bike has a factory security system.” or “You need a key or a FOB to start it.”  Well just because the thief may not ride off on it, doesn’t mean they still can’t take it. Adding security measures that will thwart the best of them is as simple as installing a disc lock, which keeps them from rolling the bike. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com)  doesn’t want you to be a victim, that is why we carry many different styles of locks that will help secure your ride. In addition we carry cable locks and even chain locks on steroids, and some locks carry an anti-theft guarantee reimbursement ranging from $1000.00 to $3500.00, depending on the model selected. Sure you may ask what makes a lock that safe, well many of them have drill proof or pick proof technology, braided stainless cable  making it extremely difficult to cut through, and by design offer little to no room for intrusion.

According to the NCB (National Insurance Crime Bureau) motorcycle thefts in 2010 (no data was available for 2011 or 2012) have decreased some 24% in relation with the figures of 2007. n 2007, 65,678 motorcycles were stolen, while in 2010, “only” 49,791 were nicked. Compared to 2009 there was a decrease (11% for 56,093 stolen bikes), but not as big as 2007. The busiest months for motorcycle thieves are typically  June, July and August. The top brands that were stolen: (1) Honda, 12,260; (2) Yamaha, 9,853; (3) Suzuki, 7,869; (4) Kawasaki, 5,470; and (5) Harley-Davidson, 3,301.

Here are a few helpful tips when out and needing to secure your bike or bikes.

  • Park as close to the front entrance as possible. This helps by placing the bike in the highest traffic flow, drawing attention if someone were to attempt to steal it.
  • If there is more than 1 bike, try parking as close together as allows, and if you can, secure as many bikes together as space dictates.
  • Use disc locks whenever possible as this may discourage many would be thieves. If they can’t roll it to the trailer or to the waiting rider, you have succeeded.
  • Make sure your insurance is paid and has ample coverage. There is no bigger disappointment than having to hear your insurance agent keep repeating, “That isn’t covered, that isn’t covered, that isn’t covered, …..”
  • Make good decisions – Don’t pick lodging in an undesirable area because “The Little Gnome got me a great deal.” Always employ anti-theft security measures. Don’t invite theft. When pulling into the hotel, don’t rev the motor, or crank the stereo, also don’t let them know there are valuables in the luggage. Don’t stow your gear when you are outside, wait till you get in to take off the riding gear. Be aware of your surroundings and who is there.

I know if the thief wants your bike bad enough, he won’t let much stop him, but there are many security measures available that can greatly decrease the risk of someone else enjoying your ride. Take a look at all the different locks K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) has to offer, and let us help you with the security to give you peace of mind.

Corporate Acquisitions – For Us or them? Super Trapp buys Jardine

Category : MC News

jardineIn a world of corporate acquisitions, few ever really yield results that benefit the consumer. That may have changed recently when Super Trapp announced the purchase of Jardine Performance Products. K and G Cycles(www.kandgcycles.com) is proud to bring you this recent industry news. For those that may not know, Jardine manufactures more than high-performance exhausts, they also produce highway bars, forward controls, back rests, luggage racks and other motorcycle related accessories for the Harley- Davidson, metric, sport, dirt bike and ATV markets. This will without question increase the overall lineup offered by Super Trapp, known primarily for performance exhaust and Paul Yaffe creations, and customers will continue to receive the same high-quality product and customer service that they have counted on years past. Kevin Berger, President of Super Trapp Industries, Inc. stated, “We look forward to adding Jardine Performance Products to the Super Trapp family of products.  We are confident that the combined talents and resources of the two brands will be of a great benefit to our customers and market place.” It seems this purchase kept the customer in mind, and knowing the performance background of these two companies, it appears the mission remains the same. As we wait for details to emerge, we here at K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) applaud the efforts to keep the customer satisfied by keeping brand identity and quality the main focus. When two legends come together the results can be amazing. When two legends come together, the results can also be disastrous. Here’s to a long healthy relationship Super Trapp and Jardine, one based on performance and sound, two qualities we all look for when choosing the right match. Match of motorcycle and exhaust that is, had to clarify that in case the significant other saw this and started to wonder.

Stop Thieves with Brukus

Category : Great Products, Tech Stuff

brukus saddlebag locksHave you ever ridden somewhere, gone inside, only to come back and find thieves have helped themselves to gear stowed in your bag or worse yet, the entire bag or bags? Have you gone out to eat at a new restaurant and come out only to see your jiffy stand stuck in the new pavement?  Well there is a company that has heard your cry and developed a complete line of motorcycle security and stabilization products – Brukus Motorcycle Parts

Securing a motorcycle and its contents is not an easy task, one of the most vulnerable aspects of our bikes is our saddlebags. With no lock installed from the factory, thieves know if they are successful in removing the bags, the bounty inside could be worth more than the bags themselves. Brukus Motorcycle Parts available through K and G Cycles(www.kandgcycles.com) offers saddlebag locks that fit Harley touring hard bags as well as soft bags, Victory hard and soft bags, and Yamaha too. In this video, a Brukus technician shows you just how quick someone can have your soft bag if you don’t have the security system installed.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivvR-MzuwpI&feature=player_embedded. Scarey is the only word I can think to say. Especially since we all know what we keep in them.

In addition to the bag locks, Brukus has included in their line up products that keep the rest of your removable bike parts safe too. Do you have a detachable windshield? This is probably the easiest piece on a Harley to remove, and with many prices above $300, this is a heavily stolen item you can easily secure. Also available is a Tour Pack Bullet Secure  that allows you lock down detachable Tour Packs or detachable backrests and luggage racks. There is even a replacement Secure Seat lock system for solo or two up seats. Sure you may say to yourself, “This won’t happen to me.” but in reality, it’s just a matter of time. Criminals are becoming more daring and far less selective on who they victimize or what they take. If there is any value, you can be certain they will try to take it from you, don’t give them that chance.

I know you are wondering why I mentioned stabilization when all I’ve talked about is theft prevention, well, not only does Brukus Motorcycle Parts carry a remarkable line of security products, they also have a product available that is sure to be on every motorcyclists wish list. Kick Shoe is a thicker, wider “shoe” you place on your existing  jiffy stand, that is designed to stabilize your bike when parked on uneven or soft surfaces. Too often you have seen a motorcycle on its side on a freshly paved parking lot or field at a rally. Don’t let this be you. Kick Shoe is made of polycarbonate, ABS plastic , and capped with polished aluminum. Whether you want to keep your saddle bags or keep the bike from sinking into the ground, K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) offers the complete line of Brukus Motorcycle Parts for your Harley, Victory or Yamaha.

Need more Chrome?

Category : Great Products

Klock Werks ChromeIt seems this wickedly hot weather most of us have been experiencing has taken away some of our riding time. What it has allowed us to do is figure out more accessories to add to our bike. What does that mean? More Chrome! I know you say you have all the chrome you need, but K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) is giving you the chance to have a Chrome Windshield form Klock Werks for your H-D Touring bike equipped with the “Batwing” style fairing. These masterpieces come in 6.5″ and 8.0″ designs, that give you more chrome, and the famed “Hips and Lips” design. Yes, it does sound funny, but that is actually what Klock Werks calls the functional designs built in to this windshield. The “Hips” provide additional down force adding stability at higher speeds, while the “Lips” flip the air up and redirect it so the turbulence is greatly reduced and the air is cleaned up, and smoothed out for the rider, adding up to a more comfortable, better handling ride.

So now you have to say to yourself, “I can actually buy a piece of chrome that is good looking AND functional? ” The answer is “Yes” through it’s innovative design and countless hours of research and fine tunings Klock Werks windshields do more for you with less. Not only will you notice a better performing bike at higher speeds, a shorter windshield from Klock Werks performs better than a 2″ taller stock windshield due to the way it’s designed and the way it redirects the air around the rider.  So when you want to add that unique piece of chrome that will do more than look good, why not let K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) help you select the Chrome Flare Windshield form Klock Werks in the size that’s best for you, and watch your buddies turn green with envy.

Give me a Brake

Category : Tech Stuff

Brakes-catDo your brakes seem to be lacking stopping power? Do you have a lot of miles on your bike? Is there an upgrade available for your motorcycle? All these are great questions that can be answered with a “Yes”, but there is much more to be considered.  There is no shortage of replacement brake pad manufacturers who are offering everything from OEM style replacement brakes to high performance brakes and everything between.  The terminology related to brakes nowadays can be confusing at best, so we will discuss them briefly and what they offer.  K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) has a full line up of quality brake parts to fit your needs at a great price.

First you need to determine if your bike has brake pads or brake shoes. Brake pads will correspond with disc brakes, usually found on more current models of bikes, while brake shoes and drum brakes generally belong to older bikes. Next you need to ask yourself what you are looking for in a brake pad/shoe. Let’s jump right in and stop this confusing madness about what brake pads/shoes will work for you.

We will start by highlighting Semi-Metallic/Organic pads:

Semi-Metallic/Organic pads are a great overall choice and offer enhanced braking ability and won’t break the bank.

  • Great feel and modulation for OEM replacement
  • Long lasting and very little rotor wear
  • Good in wet and/or dry conditions
  • Overall a very versatile compound for almost every need.
  • Do not need time to “warm up” for optimal performance.
  • Generally cost less than ceramic pads.

Another option is Ceramic pads, an excellent choice for a more aggressive rider.

  • For moderately aggressive, sport street riding, and off road
  • Advanced ceramic composites ready to withstand higher temperatures than regular Semi-Metallic carbon brake pads
  • HH friction rated compounds deliver excellent feel and modulation.
  • Capable of handling almost any type of riding you throw at them

Kevlar Brake pads seem to be the toughest of the mix, but may also command the most money.

  • Powerful, linear feel
  • Great modulation and control
  • Little rotor wear
  • Excellent on dry conditions
  • Overall a very predictable and fade-free compound

For the motorcyclist that spends most of the time on the track, a metallic carbon pad may be the way to go.

  • Carbon based composite for race use on stainless steel discs
  • Requires some heat to operate
  • Laser cut, double disc ground backing plates to assure perfect flatness
  • Easy to modulate, very progressive

In addition to upgrading your brake pads, you might consider replacing your brake fluid too. Contaminants such as dirt and moisture will break down the fluid over time, and now is a good time to flush the lines and  replace it if you are replacing your brake pads Whether your pads are worn out, you want increased performance, or have a track bike, there is a brake pad that will meet your demands at K and G Cycles ( www.kandgcycles.com ).

V-Twins at Indy?

Category : MC News

moto gp xr1200This past weekend if you were in the Midwest, specifically Indianapolis at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you would have heard something unusual coming from the track, the sound of motorcycles racing, I’m not talking about the high revving in-line 4 cylinder race bikes, I’m talking about V-twin engines tucked inside a race spec version of Harley-Davidson’s XR1200. Sure you may say this is nothing new, people have been racing motorcycles for a really long time, and you would be right, however this is a spec class that only allows the same modifications to all the bikes.  Due to the fact all racers start with the same bike and use the exact same mods needed to put this bike on the track means the racing is on a level playing field and usually results in a tougher competition. Probably one of the neatest things to come out of this series is the range of racers, some are seasoned pros while others are everyday people. This class is a fairly inexpensive to enter, and has “Joe Neighbor” racing with the big names, and at times beating them. The race series offers 12 races at 11 of the best road courses across the U.S. so this is no cake walk. The XR1200 series had 2 races at Indy, 1 Saturday, and 1 Sunday, full of excitement including a crash leading to a winner change after review. Proving it is capable of entertaining the masses, “Motorcycles on Meridian ” was an event in downtown Indianapolis around Monument Circle that was a gathering of all types of motorcycles from bone stock, to radical custom builds, and just about everything in between with a focus on motorcycling, motorcyclist, and race fans and gave them a chance to celebrate all thing motorcycles.

Saturday Race Results:

It looks like Indianapolis Motor Speedway has proven to be a 1st Class facility as they are going to announce next years dates very soon. If you missed it this year, make planes to get to Indianapolis next summer for some great racing in a world class venue – The Legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Don’s Bio

Category : Team K and G

Bio-ShotName: Don Kopach

What position do you play on The K and G Team? Director of Media and Marketing – Long story short, everything you see on Facebook, Twitter,Pinterest, or Google+  I am responsible for. Yes, I actually do get paid to “play” on the internet. I am also in charge of maintaining the V-Twin Blog and the Metric Blog, which consists of product reviews and special interest stories,  as well as advice  collumns, industry news, and event news. My hat rack also includes one covering Sales Support Staff.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in La Porte, Indiana, and about 10 yrs ago I headed south to Bloomington, Indiana. South Central Indiana is a great place to ride a motorcycle.

Tell us about your family: Well to begin with I come from a family of 6, 5 older sisters, and NO I was not spoiled. Between Mom and Dads siblings I have 55 first cousins. Mom was a Registered Nurse so playing sick never worked well.  Dad worked in the Steel Mills near Gary. Our house was always the gathering point for all the relatives because it was right between Moms family and Dads, you never knew who would be downstairs when you woke up, having “Coffee and Rolls” as my wonderful Aunt Dragitza would say. After high school I got my first bike, a 76′ Kawasaki KE 175, a buddy owed me $20 and gave that to me instead. My first street bike came 2 yrs later  – a 1986 Kawasaki Vulcan 750. 3 bikes later I have a 2008 Buell Ulysses XB12X, V-twin power(103hp + 86ft lbs tq) with unbelievable handling – an Adventure Touring Bike.  After my move south, I met my wife, married, and we now have a young daughter.

What is your favorite quote/by whom/ and why? “Pain Heals, Chicks Dig Scars, and Glory – Lasts Forever” Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves) “The Replacements”  It speaks the truth, it isn’t really classy or very inspirational. Or “You’re gonna have to bust us all up”  a friend Chicago 1999 before a bar fight. It’s just a classic from the “King of 1 Liners”

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? Of course getting married and having a beautiful baby is tops, also on my list of accomplishments is founding The Midwest Motorcop Skills Rodeo (5 yrs strong), and having it televised for 2 of the years.

What is your Favorite place in the whole world? One single place is tough to call, how about top 3 – Ireland,  Bolongo Bay Resort St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and definitely wherever my friends and family are.

What is your favorite thing about K and G Cycles?     Being the newest member of The K and G Team, I would have to say so far the amount of products we have available is mind numbing. Working with team members that are on top of their game is a bonus not only for me but for the customers too. K and G Cycles has welcomed me aboard with open arms.

Ladies Need Gear Too

Category : Great Products

unik ladies leatherWhether you are a rider or passenger, ladies need a good quality riding gear that fits correctly and provides protection. All too often we see the women on bikes wearing a a mans jacket or a regular jacket both offering little to no protection other than temperature and bugs. the typical response is “I don’t ride very often.” or “That stuff is way too expensive.” and even “He doesn’t wear this anymore so it will work.” All these comments show people have minimal knowledge when it comes to leathers or riding gear. K and G Cycles(www.kandgcycles.com) is here to help select the right jacket for you. Regardless of the amount you actually ride, you owe it to yourself to have a jacket that fits as it should and offers you outstanding protection. You may not realize it but if you are wearing a jacket that is even 1 size too big you are prone to more fatigue from the jacket movement in the wind. It will in a sense beat you without you knowing, causing muscle fatigue and wearing you out quicker. Another distinct advantage to a properly sized motorcycle jacket is if it has armor the protective pads will be in the right place to give you the best protection should you ever call on it. As you know, a lot of motorcycle jackets are made of leather because of its durability, cost effectiveness, and versatility. Leather can withstand almost anything thrown at it, is very customizable, and offers a substantial amount of protection in a fairly lightweight package.

Take for example Unik Leathers Women’s Naked Cowhide Classic Vented Jacket, this leather jacket not only looks great with its classic lines, it has many great features too.

  • Zip out liner, making this a more versatile multi-season jacket.
  • 2 Front pockets with zippers, keeping smaller items secure.
  • 2 inside zippered pockets for even more small item storage.
  • Vented back for increased temperature control.
  • Front and side laces.

This is just one fine example of the many ladies jackets offered by K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com). Check out the great deals available and pick up a jacket that fits you and your style. See the difference the right fit makes for your ride.

DIY Home Shop

Category : Fun Stuff, Great Products, Tech Stuff

Setting up a motorcycle friendly home garage is something we all would like to do, but may not know what we need. Just like anything, there are basic set-ups, mid-range designs, and full blown, over the top shops. Many factors need to be considered when designing your at home shop such as level of use, available floor space, weather, entertainment, and cost. Some of these may seem silly, but as we examine each one, it will be clear why these all contribute to a functional, well organized shop, that will provide you with years of service.

Thdiy mc garagee first piece that will have you establishing your DIY Home Shop is a motorcycle lift, available from K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com). Ask yourself “How much will I use it?”, and “How much room do I really have?”. The first style of lifting device is a frame jack, offering big lifting numbers, compact design, and can be rolled around the garage to give you the best use of space. These do take some getting used to because their jack point is the frame and can seem unstable, but by maintaining an average 16″ lifting height that allows you access to the underside of the bike and having multiple anchor points that add stability when the bike is tied down, these frame jacks are a fully capable and inexpensive alternative when starting up your home shop. In addition, if space is at a premium, these are a great choice as they have a small footprint and can be stored just about anywhere. If you want to raise the bike even higher, a drive on motorcycle lift will give you approximately 30″ of lift allowing you to stand next to the bike and work on it. Less mobility is a trade off for greater capacity and increased lift range so placement of the unit is a critical decision. Securing the motorcycle to the lift is a cinch with the front wheel clamp and additional anchor points fore and aft. Many of these lifts are powered by pneumatic lift cylinders making it much easier to raise the bike to operating level. They also have a drop down lock bar that can secure the deck in1 of 4 height settings.

Since this style of motorcycle lift operates on an air cylinder, it looks like an air compressor needs to be added to your list of must haves. The good news is an air compressor will perform many more tasks for you than powering the lift. You can maintain tire pressure on anything more easily. It also opens you up to air tools, making vehicle maintenance and modification easier. If you have 1 lift and a few air tools there is no need to run out and buy a 150 gallon 3 phase compressor, a lift will require about 100 psi to run smoothly so an affordable compressor rated for 125 psi should do the trick. Your local hardware store or home improvement center should be able to help you decide what will work best for you.

Another thing to consider is tools and tool storage. Do you have the right tools for the job you are intending to do?  There is a large range of tools needed to allow you to do everything from servicing the fluids to customization of your bike.  Today, even special tools that used to be a dealership item only can be ordered allowing you even more ability at home. Something to keep in mind is even though it is very tempting to have the “Big Name” tools, they can end up costing you thousands of dollars. If we used them everyday that would be fine, but for most of us being a weekend warrior is as deep as we get so opting for a less expensive choice might be a good idea. There are plenty of high quality tools available with lifetime warranties available at reasonable prices. .  Tool storage options are limitless. You can have a tool box in almost any color and size, as well as some that even have radios built in. When buying a tool box, you want to make sure it is built well, has a solid feel, good finish, has a sufficient weight capacity, and falls in your budget. One suggestion when buying a tool box would be, make sure you have room for expansion because you will be buying more tools and will need a place to store them. Something else to think about is shelving and storage bins because there will always be a need for miscellaneous screws, bolts, zip ties, oils, filters, and cleaning supplies to be put somewhere.

Weather is something that should be considered when assembling your home shop. Are you going to make room in an existing garage? Do you have a pole barn that is being finished? Are you going to convert that min barn? Regardless of where you decide to place your new shop, you will want to make sure you have adequate access to the shop for you and your bike, proper ventilation, if you will be in there in cooler weather sufficient insulation will be a concern, and as well as adequate lighting. These are all important so any fumes are removed from the building, temperatures are comfortable, and so you don’t have to wheel that bike through the dirt or mud to get into your new shop.

Now I know many of you are scratching your head on the “entertainment” aspect of the new shop so let me explain. Many of us like to work with music playing in the background, or maybe we like to listen to the game., whatever your choice it is entertainment. If it is just you in the garage a mini-shelf system may satisfy, if you are in an out building you may want to “crank it up” and get something bigger, or if your shop turns into a hang out for the buddies you ride with a flat screen with a surround system may be the ticket. TV’s can be place just about anywhere anymore, especially with the advent of wireless receivers.

So you see, your new DIY Home Shop can be anything from the spot in the garage when you pull your vehicle out to a full fledged mechanics area with a party room. Whatever you choose, whether your wrenching or detailing, catching the game or grabbing a brew with the crew, you can easily customize a place that meets your needs on almost any budget. The first step is letting K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) hook you up with the jack that meets your needs, at a price that is sure to please.

Comfort, Style, and Protection

Category : Great Products

Ccrash baromfort, style, and protection are 3 words that are usually not associated with each other, unless you are talking about engine guards. Many people also call them “Crash Bars” , but that sort of sets a bad tone, kinda like saying, “There’s nothing to worry about, I’ve got a crash bar.” Engine Guards available from K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) come in many different shapes and styles, and most are available in Chrome or Black. The main objective when installing an engine guard is to give protection to the engine and paint should the bike go over on its side.  Engine guards usually will keep the bike off the riders legs if the rider goes down with the bike, in most cases preventing more serious injury.

Digging deeper into Engine Guards, with the addition of highway pegs and mounts, they now are set up to offer us increased comfort, especially on longer rides. Allowing the rider to stretch out on longer rides provides greater comfort, less cramping, and a more relaxed feel, still maintaining the same amount of protection. Highway peg mounts and pegs come in a large variety of designs that match many OEM and custom themes available, as well as mounts for tall, short, or average height riders with some being dully adjustable.

Now lets talk about the Engine Guard itself. There are several models available from, but let’s start with the classic oval. This is the guard that has been around since one was available. Generally seen on the smaller bikes, these  have an unmistakable rounded oval shape that is a time proven design, with enough shoulder room to mount pegs if desired.  Next is the square of the group, literally, the top side of this offering is flat on top, with flat sides that fall back on the lower legs to attach to the frame. With its flat side, it has a large range of placement for highway pegs   This seems to be a favorite among those with intermediate size bikes. Mustache Bars are a more recent addition to the Engine Guard line up. looking quite like a mustache.  They have a a drop curve design and a rounded lower half, not leaving much room to attach pegs. To remedy this many of the Mustache Bars have integrated footrests built in either in a topside mounted pad or a flip out peg design that fold into the top when not in use. Now if you want the combination of an Engine Guard with a custom design, you’re in luck, K and G Cycles (www.kandcycles.com) has Deep Sickness Highway Bars, a combination Mustache Bar and security device all in one. Install one of these on your bike and people will be afraid to touch it. If you want to add even more protection to your bike , saddlebag guards are available, giving even more of your bike peace of mind. So you see even though comfort, style, and protection are 3 words that appear to have no possible connection, they actually work well for you and your ride.

Priority #1 – Comfort a Mandatory Upgrade

Category : Tech Stuff

Le Pera Seat

Comfort, Comfort, Comfort – one of the keys to a memorable ride. As we all know purchasing a new bike is a very exciting event, so much we overlook some of the needs to satisfy our wants. We all want more chrome, more power, and definitely more time to ride, but unless we have a great saddle, none of the others matter. Sure going from a Soft Tail or Dyna to a Touring Bike will undoubtedly be a nicer ride, there is still something lacking in a stock seat. What seat to purchase is a topic everyone has an opinion on and can be debated till the end of time, with no clear winner leaving us just as confused as before. My goal is to give you enough information and solid comparisons to make your upgrade decision easier. So sit tight and hang on as we explore the world of accessory/after market seats available from K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com).

Let’s get started with a few questions that should be answered before you choose the right seat for you and your bike. First and foremost will you be a solo or two-up rider? Your answer to this could literally cut the field in half. Solo seats are just that, a seat made for the rider only. These seats typically give you a custom look, while focusing only on the rider. Inside the category of “Solo Seats” you will notice many different profiles and shapes, along with different cushion materials. Because they are more effective in lower profile seats, memory foam and surgical gel pads can be found in quite a few of the saddles available.  Many of today’s options offer a rider backrest option, so it is possible to gain added back support allowing  longer, more enjoyable rides. So if it will be just you or you want that clean low profile look, a solo seat could be for you.

If two-up is your answer, the next question you need to ask yourself is “How often will my passenger ride with me?”  If your passenger won’t be on board much, you may be able to opt for a low profile seat that offers you a custom fit and a fender hugging design. Like the solo seats, because of the sleek profile there are a lot of units using memory foam and surgical gel pads. Now if you answered “often” or “all the time” you have to consider the passenger comfort level when shopping for a seat. A noticeable trend among 2-up touring seats is the seats being wider than stock offerings, not by much, usually 3″ for the rider and 2″ for the passenger. The additional surface allows reduced pressure points, additional lower back support for the rider, as well as an increased seating surface for the passenger. The main idea behind the bigger passenger seat is it places more surface under the thighs, reducing pressure on the the lower legs, minimizing leg fatigue. Most two-up touring seats accommodate detachable backrests, adding additional support for the rider.

Another concern to address is whether your height mandates a changed in the seat. A lot of manufacturers make available a seat that is narrower in the horn, allowing the feet to come closer together, “giving” you more height and reducing the reach distance to the handlebars. While an option for the taller individuals raises them up and away from the bars to decrease the cramped, slouching feel they are experiencing. Almost an industry standard these specialty seats are referred to as “Reach Seats” “Reduced Reach Seats” or “Tallboy Seats” .

An emerging trend in the motorcycle world is custom built seats from local merchants. Many of these custom shops can tailor the seat to match your specific needs whether you need to sit lower in the bike or if you need a taller seat. Often times the stock seat covering can be retained, have custom stitching applied, or swapped out for a more exotic skin. Like the big guys, a lot of the local shops are utilizing memory foam and surgical gel too, so your comfort is their concern also.

Now that you have all this great, helpful information, all you have to do is hit K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) choose your design, style, and manufacturer, and get a great seat upgrade that will allow you to enjoy many more miles comfortably.

Category : Great Products

You bought a new bike and want to take the best care of it that you can. We’ll spend hours cleaning it because that’s what we do. We spend thousands on accessories to make it ours because that’s what we do. We run synthetic fluids through the bike because it’s better for it. That is all great, however, there is one thing many of us neglect until it’s too late – the battery. Sure some of us think if we get 2 years of battery life that is great. Heck, there are even some that think it’s a part of preseason service to replace the battery. K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com) has just the thing to protect your battery and your investment, you can use a Super Smart Battery Tender Junior 12v to maintain your battery for a much longer life. The Battery Tender Junior is more than your standard trickle charger, it is really a maintainer that regulates the charge to the battery through an on board brain, so it is almost like having your own battery butler. This “smart” feature monitors the battery and depending on its strength it will either charge, maintain, or store the battery so there is never a fear of overcharging and destroying the battery. Better Handling and a Smoother Ride from a Windshield?

Category : Great Products

Do you ever wonder why you see so many different windshields on motorcycles? Some change them to get a different look on the bike. Others change them depending on their height so they can be more protected or end up having more wind in their face. Regardless of your choice, the wind STILL gets you, unless you have installed a Klock Werks “Flare” windshield, available from K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com). You might ask, “What does their windshield do that the others don’t?” When the “Flare” was developed, its main goal was to provide increased stability at higher speeds, even racing at Bonneville. This was able due to the design re-directing the air over the outer edge (hips as Klock Werks calls them) providing increased downward pressure to the front of the motorcycle, increasing the stability at speed. The rolled top (flip by Klock Werks dictionary) of the “Flare” is designed to flip the air up, calming the flow, allowing smooth, clean air for the rider.

Some things you might not know about the “Flare” windshield from Klock Werks

■Fits 1996-2012 FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHX, FLHTK, and FL Trike Models, and have pre-drilled mounting holes making installation easy while using the stock hardware. There are also some 6.5” versions available for older models.
■Due to the design, it is recommended proper windshield height be at a level that allows you to see over the top, rather than looking through it.
■3.5″ height is designed for riders accustomed to a shorter windscreen.
■6.5″ height was the first style created for batwing style fairings, and works great for the average height rider. This windshield does not accept 3 pouch windshield bags, or GPS units.
■8.5″ height blends the sporty style of the 6.5″ with taller touring height of the 11.5″. This size seems to be better for taller riders, and works with 3 pouch windshield bags or a GPS
■11.5″ is the tallest model. Comparable height to a stock FLH windshield, offering full coverage for riders that prefer that, yet maintains the down force and features of the FLARE.
■All of Klock Werks Flare Windshields are measured from the center bolt hole to the start of the flip on the top of the windshield, setting a standard for measurement.
■When deciding which FLARE will work for you, remember, a shorter FLARE will outperform a stock windshield that is even 2″ taller because of its design and the way it routes the air.
■Lexan® Polycarbonate with FMR hard coating is used in the creation of these custom-molded designs to provide unparalleled durability.
■FLARES have been wind tunnel designed and tested. The “hips” provide added down force while the “flip” directs air over the rider to virtually eliminate the swirl of air found in front of the rider common with standard windshields.
■Keep in mind when selecting a FLARE windshield, the black, chrome, and black chrome windshields are completely opaque, you cannot see through them. This could potentially be a hazard.
■Clean-up is simple, soap and water. If you want, you can follow up with polish such as Novus or Plexus. Do Not use petroleum based or ammonia based cleaners including rain sheeting products!
■Saving the best for last, Klock Werks windshields are made in the U.S.A. – Mitchell, South Dakota.

These are some of the customer testimonials taken directly from Klock Werks website regarding the “FLARE” windshield:

  • From Johnie  (Rock Hill, SC) “I just had the 8.5 inch Flare installed on my 2011 Ultra Classic and man was I blown away what difference it made.  It is awesome.  I’m going to tell all my friends that ride to invest in one of these windshields.  Thanks for the great product you designed.”
  • From Jim Sehnert -  The 11.5″ Klock Werks Flare Windshield worked just great.  I installed it in Utah, and used it through the entire trip of 22,000 miles.  8,400 miles of it during the HOKA HEY Challenge.  It did a terrific job of keeping stones and bugs above me.  It gave me the protection from the rain also that I needed.  All kinds of weather was experienced during this run.  The height was just right to allow me to see through it or over it as needed.  Thanks again for your support.

Klock Werks FLARES, available at K and G Cycles (www.kandgcycles.com), not only fit the FL fairing bikes from Harley, they are available for the entire line up, as well as Victory motorcycles. So pick one up today and feel the difference.

The 110 year old Debate

Category : Tech Stuff

Do you ever wonder why no two motorcycles sound the same? Why don’t those two 2012 Black Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic Limited’s with the 103” motor and 6-speed transmission sound the same? Why don’t those two 2012 Red Honda Goldwing 1800’s sound the same? It may seem odd that 2 seemingly identical bikes wouldn’t sound the same, but the most common reason is the factory exhaust has been changed out in order to gain performance and offer a better sound. Today’s motorcyclist has literally hundreds of options of exhaust available to them.

Let’s begin with the V-Twin market (Harley, Victory, or even any of the custom bikes that utilize a v-twin motor) and explore the options available.

  •  Slip Ons or aftermarket mufflers are the simplest and usually the easiest exhaust change, especially on fuel injected motorcycles. They offer improved levels of sound from mild to obnoxious, and have slight performance increases without requiring any air/fuel system modifications, especially on models equipped with oxygen sensors. Slip-Ons are generally offered in a chrome and black version to give you the look you want for your bike. They also offer many different can designs such as OEM style mufflers, interchangeable end caps, oversized cans, and even Fishtail mufflers. Slip-Ons are available for most touring models, soft tails, sport cruisers, and more with a design that is sure to meet your needs.
  • Next up, we turn to Full Systems which will have quite a few sub-classes. A full system is a complete replacement for the stock exhaust system and will require carburetor re-jetting or fuel injection remapping. We’ll discuss that later along with hi-flow air filters.
  • Full Length Exhaust will typically run low on the right side of the bike and end at the rear axle or at the rear fender. They are usually 1 pipe per cylinder, having no separate muffler, keeping a uniform diameter front to rear.  One classic combination often seen is Vance and Hines “Long Shots” or “Big Shots Long” on the Harley-Davidson FL Softtail line (Heritage Softtail Classic, Fatboy, or Softtail Deluxe models) along with good looks they deliver a healthy, traditional sound, and an impressive performance gain.
  • Staggered Exhaust resembles stock systems the most by retaining the staggered or offset look. With staggered systems, some are offered in a 1 piece design while others a 2 piece head pipe/ muffler design.  One example is the Sampson “Tapered Performance Staggered Duals”, still leans towards the traditional sound, but frees up a few ponies. The staggered exhaust is the last of the line up that keeps you in the “Traditional Sound” category.
  • Shorty’s are best known for their chopped look and crazy sound. As the name implies these pipes are cut as short as possible while leaving just enough of a tail. They will generally go no further than the rider controls. They do offer increased sound verging on wicked and contribute more power (augh ough augh augh ough!).
  • Now comes the retail custom often given the name ”Ground Pounders” or “Street Sweepers”, these pipes are slightly swept and point toward the ground. Martin Brothers “Curb Feelers” are a great example of the extreme bends of this style of pipe. Most notably is of course it’s radical design, followed by the obscene sound produced by these pipes. Power? Well let’s just say you won’t believe the difference.
  • Drag Pipes or Straight Pipes are often seen on carbureted bikes for people that just seem to want as much sound as possible. These pipes tend to be slightly smaller in diameter, and do not have baffles in them. You can usually spot drag pipes because they often turn the chrome blue. Don’t plan on having a conversation around these because they are LOUD!

  • Let’s calm it down a bit, and switch gears to True Duals. Believe it or not, this style is not reserved just for touring bikes. True Duals are literally just that, each cylinder has its own exhaust pipe with no crossover or equalizer chamber. The options for dressers seem to cover as many choices as there are minutes in the day. Changeable tips, oversized cans, low rumbley tones to glass pack cackles. These are very popular on dressers, but a few companies offer them for softtails too. Some of the designs can get pretty crazy too, with Fishtails hangin out back pretty far. This creates a radical “Old School “custom look.  Once again, increased power and increased sound are results of this type of installation.

  • Not to be left out is the performance enhancing 2 into 1 system. These systems are employed when the rider wants the most return out of their motor. When a bike has engine modifications that increase the performance, a “Pro Pipe” as they are often called, is the best way to harness the newly acquired power. A lot of people tend to steer clear of 2 into 1 set ups because they aren’t visually appealing to the masses, even though they typically deliver the most bang for the buck.

NOW, if I have done my job correctly, I have given you just the right amount of information to confuse you even more.
